Thesis preparation, submission and publishing — UCL Doctoral School

Format your thesis

  • Title page: official title; full registered name; institution 'UCL'; degree.
  • Declaration Form: Doctoral Candidate Declaration Form; include authorship, AI use, inclusion of published works.
  • Abstract: ≤300 words.
  • Impact Statement: ≤500 words.
  • Acknowledgements: indicate contributions per chapter if applicable.
  • Table of contents: include lists; use PDF bookmarks.
  • Abbreviations (optional); Main body; References; Appendices (optional).
  • Presentation: functional hyperlinks/DOIs; recommended Arial/Helvetica ≥12pt; printed copy legible; illustrations mounted on A4.
  • Paper: A4; plain white; double‑sided allowed.
  • Layout: binding margin ≥40mm; others ≥20mm; double or 1.5 spacing; single for quotes/footnotes allowed.
  • Pagination: continuous Arabic 1..n including all pages; place non‑bindable material in pocket/container.
  • Illustrative material: may be separate; contact Research Degrees for other formats.

Submit your thesis (viva copies)

  • Submit electronic thesis via UCL OneDrive; printed copy only if examiners request.
  • Research Degrees checks status; forwards thesis to examiners.
  • If hard copy requested: arrange printing/binding and delivery; electronic is standard per sustainability strategy.
  • If examiners not yet appointed: thesis held securely.
  • Examination entry form must be logged before submission.

Re‑submission

  • Submit new examination entry form; submit electronic thesis via OneDrive; Research Degrees forwards to examiners.

Bind your thesis (if requested)

  • Secure binding; double‑sided allowed; illustrations permanently mounted.
  • Non‑bindable material: separate storage device or pocket/container; label to match title page; include full set per copy.
  • Fine Art/Design/Architecture/Town Planning may use A3/double‑sided without permission.
